Rutgers Business School Webinar – Q&A Overflow

This evening I presented a webinar to the Rutgers Business School Alumni Association, co-sponsored by the University Alumni Association: Fearless Job Hunting: Be The Profitable Hire.

I am a school counselor. What is the best way to search for a job in New Jersey and Pennsylvania? Thank you.

@Suzanne: Schools are a special case. Those jobs tend to be filled by handpicked insiders with connections. So when in Rome… I’d pick a few schools you’d like to work in, and start cultivating contacts and making new friends now. This will take some time, but it’s worth the investment. One suggestion for how to do this: Contact the head counselor at a target school AFTER you research it a bit in the media and online. Find something they do that’s unique in counseling. Then ask if you could come by to observe how they do it. “I’m always trying to learn new methods, and your school is a shining light (well, don’t overdo it!). Do you have half an hour to meet, to discuss with me how your program works?”

Again, this will take time. By talking shop, you become an insider. Make sense? (Hey, I didn’t say this was easy or quick.)
